Big question, plain answer

How Much Does Trucking Insurance Cost? Real Numbers for Owner Operators.

$8,000 to $18,000 per year for a new authority owner-op is the realistic range. Here's exactly what drives the number, and how to get yours toward the bottom of that range.

For a new authority owner operator, expect to pay between $8,000 and $18,000 per year for primary liability and physical damage combined. That's the realistic range for most new authorities running dry van, flatbed, or reefer freight.

The range is wide because four things drive the price: what you haul, how far you run, the value of your truck, and your driving record.

Dry van and flatbed running regional routes typically land on the lower end. Auto transport, hazmat, and cross-country operations push the number higher. A newer truck with a higher stated value costs more to insure for physical damage.

The cost breakdown

Here's what the breakdown looks like on a per-month basis:

These are real ranges, not worst-case numbers. Some new authorities pay less. Some pay more. The only way to know your actual number is to get a real quote.

Why new authorities cost more

Carriers price new authorities higher because they have no loss history to work with. They see a DOT number that's 30 days old and no operating record, so they price in the unknown. That gap usually closes after 12 to 18 months of clean operation.

Some carriers will revisit your rate after 6 months if you've had no claims and no violations. We watch for that and ask for a re-underwrite when the time is right.

Seasoned authority vs. new authority

The same exact operation with two years of clean history usually pays 20 to 40 percent less than a brand new authority. That's the reward for getting through year one without claims. It's also why we fight hard to get you in a carrier that will stick with you long term, switching every year makes you look less seasoned on paper.

Stated value vs. actual cash value

Physical damage can be written either way. Stated value means the agreed dollar amount is what you'd get at total loss, minus deductible. Actual cash value means you get the depreciated market value at the time of loss. Stated value is usually better for financed trucks. Actual cash value is usually cheaper up front.

How to get your actual number

No online calculator can give you your real rate. Every carrier underwrites differently. The only way to know is to actually submit to multiple carriers and see what they come back with. That's what we do, across 23+ markets, in a single phone call or online form.

How monthly payments work

Most trucking insurance policies are written annual and financed monthly through a premium finance company. You put 20-25% down and finance the rest over 9-10 months at a small interest rate. Some carriers offer direct-bill monthly without a finance company, especially for seasoned authorities.

If you can pay annual or semi-annual, you save the finance charge , usually 3-5% of the premium.

Red flags on cheap quotes

If someone quotes you $5,000/year as a new authority running OTR, something's wrong. Either they're quoting the FMCSA minimum (not the $1M brokers require), they forgot cargo coverage, or they quoted a carrier that won't actually bind the policy once underwriting looks at it. We'll tell you when a quote is too good to be true.

Typical pricing by truck type and commodity

Here's what we see across our carrier panel, broken down by the most common truck and commodity combinations. Year 1 is new authority pricing. Year 2+ assumes a clean record with no claims.
